“Garden Up!”, Y’all! It’s a Cyber Blog Party

in Miscellaneous Musings

Hey, I’m all about a party–you give me a reason and I’m there! And I’m so excited, because today is one of the biggest reasons to party and celebrate this spring–my super-talented landscape designer and writer friends, Rebecca Sweet and Susan Morrison, have written a fantastic book that is in bookstores starting today! “Garden Up! Smart Vertical Gardening for Small and Large Spaces” (Cool Springs Press) is a gorgeous, timely book about using vertical spaces in your garden to maximize your square footage. To celebrate the release of this book, J. Peterson Garden Design is co-hosting a cyber book party today, complete with door prizes and party favors!

Rebecca and Susan are personal friends as well as colleagues of mine, so I would be so excited and proud about this book no matter what! But what makes it even more exciting is that they have honored me by including pictures of my own balcony garden and featuring me in a “Design Spotlight” in their book. Making me all verklempt, those two. So are you ready to party with me? Here’s the door prize: anyone leaving a comment on this post is eligible to win a $75 gift certificate from the incredibly awesome Santa Fe and Alubuquerque-based High Country Gardens– this online nursery not only caters to gardeners who are committed to xeriscaping (make me swoon, why don’t you), but they offer really cool plants that would add a gorgeous vertical accent to any garden, large or small! Just think: you could get a sampler of ornamental grasses that fit perfectly into those small, tight spaces in your garden:

Or you could order wildflower seeds, unusual cacti or low-water-usage flowering perennials. But you have to enter to win, so leave a comment and in one week, we will announce the winner! But, wait, there’s more! Other blogs are participating in our Cyber Book Party, so you have chances to win all sorts of other cool garden-y things:

Rebecca Sweet: Gossip in the Garden blog, win loppers from Fiskars

Susan Morrison: Blue Planet Garden Blog, win a trellis from H. Potter

Jim Martin: Compost in my Shoe blog, win a $50 gift certificate to Annie’s Annuals

Laura Livengood Schaub: Interleafings blog, win an awesome Woolly Pocket

Angela Davis: My Rubber Boots blog, win a $25 gift certificate from Peaceful Valley

Pam Penick: Digging blog, win a succulent wall art kit from Succulent Gardens

And if you are one of the first 100 people to purchase “Garden Up!” Susan and Rebecca will send a signed book plate with a dedication to you–just click on the link and make your purchase! But remember–leave a comment on each of these blogs plus J. Peterson Garden Design to have a chance to win the fabulous door prizes (I’m doing my Vanna White hands now, can you see it??)–and the contest is open for a week, ending on Monday, March 21st, when we’ll all post the winners.

So which one do you want? The loppers? The woolly pocket? The gift certificates? Well, what are you waiting for? Go leave your comments! I think I want the succulent wall art kit, so Pam’s blog better watch out; I’m about ready to bomb it. Good luck!

Leave it to Susan and Rebecca to come up with the concept of an online book launch (with or without marketing help). Their enthusiasm is contagious!

Jan @TWOwomenANDaHOE March 15, 2011 at 6:50 pm

Awesome…I love a party, too! Congratulations Rebecca and Susan!

May all your gardens grow!

linda scott March 15, 2011 at 7:04 pm

Gasp!! Those grasses are spectacular!!

shannon lester, APLD March 15, 2011 at 8:25 pm

I would love the opportunity to try out some plants from High Country Gardens. Central Oregon is such a unique climate, it is difficult to find new, inspiring plant material to use in landscape design!

Jen Peterson March 15, 2011 at 9:39 pm

Of course, I had to enter your contest! :)

Becky Lane March 15, 2011 at 9:48 pm

Lauren Allpress March 18, 2011 at 9:51 pm

Thanks for doing this giveaway! I’m discovering so many different blogs to read.

Suzanne Offner March 19, 2011 at 2:14 pm

What a great idea! I already have my copy of the book, and I’m going through trying to work out where I can try various ideas. I really want a gutter garden! My garden is narrow, so growing up is the only way for me to grow everything I want.

Louise March 19, 2011 at 2:55 pm

What a great door prize! Please enter my name to win.

Mary March 19, 2011 at 9:11 pm

First, I think you have a terrific blog. I am glad that I stopped to visit your site. I also am excited about this new book — I think it has some terrific ideas to make my own garden sparkle. Please enter me in your drawing too. Thanks.

vbdb March 19, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Please enter me in the drawing – the book looks like a real winner even if I may not be.

Kelly Ann Wells March 19, 2011 at 9:40 pm

Elaine March 20, 2011 at 12:48 pm

I’m having lots of fun visiting all of these blogs and learning along the way. Thank you for participating in the party! It is very nice of you to provide prizes. Looking forward to getting my copy of the book – it looks to be awesome!

Tamara March 20, 2011 at 12:59 pm

So many great Austin gardening blogs! Thanks for the information and the chance at a fun door prize!

Michelle Wilson March 20, 2011 at 1:10 pm

I’m so excited for this book! Congratulations on being included! Xericscaping is slowly becoming popular out here in CA because of efforts to preserve the native grasses – and also in efforts to preserve Native American basketry heritage, which depends on them.

I’m also really excited to read about vertical edibles! This book is genius!

Hilary Barton March 20, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Beautiful book and great prizes! Such a great idea :)

Sonya Mills March 20, 2011 at 4:02 pm

Beautiful grasses – what a fun book launch party!

Connie Tompkins March 20, 2011 at 4:51 pm

I have 4 acres in town just crying out for more landscape. Thanks for the give-away.

Sharon Zigrossi March 20, 2011 at 8:23 pm

Love your blog. Planning to create your stacked containers project with succulents. Garden Up looks like a great book with new project ideas and more ways to go vertical with my gardening.

sara March 20, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Congrats on the book release! I’m excited for you and can’t wait to see it!

Amy March 20, 2011 at 10:51 pm

Pick me! I love HCG and I’m in the process of designing a vertical garden along a fence in my garden. I could use the gift certificate for that!

Carl March 20, 2011 at 10:52 pm

Looks like some good ideas for my horizontally challenged back yard!

Abbey March 20, 2011 at 10:59 pm
