After 10 years designing landscapes for my clients, part of which includes container planting, I’d like to think I’ve come up with a few pretty good ideas. But I’m not alone–I happen to have a ton of talented friends who have some awesome ideas of their own! If you’re looking for some inspiration for your fall container plants, check out these ideas:
Genevieve Schmidt: On Gen’s blog, North Coast Gardening, she shares an idea from a client for an awesome autumn combo! I fell in love with that pic; you will, too.
Fern Richardson: Fern has some great suggestions for combining herbs with fall flowers over at Life on the Balcony! She’s a smart one, that Fern.
Christina Salwitz: I found a great fall combo on Christina’s blog Personal Garden Coach–what I like about this is that it focuses on foliage rather than flowers, and can be at home both in a container or in your perennial bed! Nice to have options.
Helen Weis: Helen has a thriving Oklahoma landscape design business, Unique By Design, and her container plantings are simply stunning! Check out this fall topiary using pumpkins–I absolutely adore this idea.
Rebecca Sweet: Rebecca loves ornamental grasses, just like I do, and in this post at Gossip in the Garden, she gives examples of how to use them not only in your beds but in containers, too!
Lynn Felici Gallant: Lynn’s container planting business, Indigo Gardens, is smashingly successful, and you can understand why when you look at pics like this one. All the things about fall planting that I love so much!
Barbara Wise: This wonder woman recently completed 365 Days of Container Gardening. I love this hayrack planter full of gorgeous autumn plantings–I may have to recreate on my balcony this month!
I saw this planting at The Domain shopping center here in Austin. Love the grasses and the fall-hued flowers!

Love it! What a great round-up of container gardening ideas. Christina is the foliage QUEEN, and I love the other ideas, too. I think herbs are a perfect way to spruce up a fall planting, and grasses always make me swoon at this time of year. Thanks for sharing!
