About a month ago, I moved from an apartment with a balcony garden to a house on an acre! I loved my little balcony and the garden I created there—it was a fairly large balcony and I was able to grow a variety of plants with my morning sun and bright afternoon shade. Succulents, palms, ferns, flowers, shrub topiaries and even some herbs. But the one thing I couldn’t do very well was vegetables–I simply didn’t have the sun for what I wanted to grow. Now that I’m on an acre, I can plant whatever I want! The back 40 is full-on sun, and the closer you get up to the house, the more dappled shade we have. Perfect.
But the ultimate irony is that, even though I’m a garden designer, garden writer and avid gardener, I’m kind of at a loss when it comes to veggies. I’ve grown them before but really don’t have much experience with what to grow when, how to treat for bugs and diseases and what varieties are best. So Niki Jabbour’s new book “The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener” couldn’t have been released at a better time for me (honestly, Niki, you timed it to coincide with my move, didn’t you?)
Niki’s book gives me the kind of information I need as a newbie veggie gardener–how do I design my garden with vegetables so it looks great? When do I plant, and how much do I plant? What varieties are best? What can I do in December and January in my garden? What’s the deal with crop rotation? Do I need a cold frame? What plants do best in the cold frame, and which ones can I bring inside? You can see, I have a lot of questions–and Niki has answers for questions I didn’t even know I had.
So I’m super happy that I have my copy of “The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener,” but I’d really like for you to have a copy, too! And so would Niki. And so would Proven Winners plants. That’s why we are all putting our heads and blogs together to create a contest for one lucky reader to win a copy of Niki’s book as well as a box of delicious plants from Proven Winners.
